Usually when a home or other building catches on fire, if there is anyone inside they stand a pretty good chance of escaping. Even when someone gets trapped in burning buildings, firefighters can many times get in and perform some really heroic rescues. It is not that often that tragic deaths occur because of house fires, but they do happen. At least with these types of fires, people are already on the ground and have a reasonable possibility of surviving.

One place that can catch fire where the people on board might not have a great a chance for survival is on an airplane. People travel by plane by the millions everyday and it is not often that a fire does happen on board, but when one does occur, you can bet it causes instant fear and panic. Even a small fire of some kind is enough to cause complete pandemonium on an in flight airplane. Can you imagine knowing the airplane you are traveling in at no telling how many thousand feet is on fire and you have no way to get off?

This has been a tragedy that has happened many times as infrequent as it is. Bombs being planted on board by terrorists or just an unstable person have been the cause of crashes. Then there are also fires on board that have been caused by lightning strikes or on board electrical problems. What ever the reason the fire gets started, the real problem is can the pilots get the plane down safely in an emergency landing?

It is sometimes possible for the fire to be put out and an emergency landing not have to take place. This has also been the case in many airplane fires. Sometimes there is no fire on board the plane until the pilot is forced to make an emergency or compromised landing. Sometimes the plane is just fine flying in the air, but landing in bad weather or with faulty landing gear can cause the plane to explode and burst into planes on impact.

These last few minutes when the passengers know that there will be a problem landing must be so terrifying. Knowing that the chances of landing safely are small and that the possibility or wrecking the aircraft and having it come apart and possibly burst into flames has to be horrible. This is exactly what has happened in many emergency landings and there is not a thing the passengers on board can go except be ready to escape the airplane as soon as the crash is over.
